Last season's beaten finalists Lancashire opening their 2025 Bill Beaumont County Championship, Division One, Pool One campaign with a 24-17 victory over their Somerset counterparts at Weston-super-Mare RFC on Saturday, May 17, 2025.

Somerset flew out of the blocks the faster as they grabbed the opening try after just seven minutes, after the patient build-up allowed captain Sam Taylor (Old Redcliffians) to dive over in the corner.

But the visitors fought back and went in front in the 16th minute through Ben Turner (Fylde), after he danced his way through to go over. Alex Clayton (Fylde) kicked over the extras.

Lancashire increased their lead even further with two tries in three minutes to shock the home crowd.

The first came from Sam Stott (Fylde), after he charged down a poor kick before a great passage of play allowed captain Matthew Sturgess (Sedgley Park) to lay the ball to Clayton to go over.

Clayton made it three from three with his conversion to make it 21-7 at half-time.

Somerset hit back three minutes after the break through Hornets Charlie Carter’s fine solo try to give the hosts a chance of a fightback.

But Clayton maintained his perfect record from his foot with a penalty in front of the posts 11 minutes later to move Lancashire one step closer to winning the match.

However, Somerset kept going and were rewarded for their effort when Hornets Tommy Bailey powered through to go over, with Adam Mallinson (Sedgley Park) shown a yellow card in the aftermath.

Jamie Elswood (Dings Crusaders) stepped up to convert to move Somerset within one converted try score behind, but Lancashire held firm and resolute to come away victorious.

Looking ahead, next Saturday (May 24), Somerset will travel to Brantingham Park, the home of Hull Ionians RFC, to face County Champions Yorkshire, kick off at 3 pm.

Then on Saturday, May 31, it will be the battle of the Roses – and a repeat of last season’s County final, when Lancashire will host Yorkshire at Fylde RUFC, kick-off again at 3 pm
