Hornets Colts 39 Royal Wootton Bassett U18A 26
Finally, a welcome break in the rain—and a cracking match to go with it. Hornets Colts welcomed a strong Royal Wootton Bassett side to the Nest on what turned out to be a surprisingly sunny afternoon, with the game expertly refereed the crowd were treated to a high scoring encounter.
RWB opened the scoring after some lacklustre Hornets defence at the back of a lineout led to a converted try. Hornets responded quickly, with scrum-half Aaron Thompson stretching over from close range. The conversion was missed, but captain Kaden Lampard soon powered over for another try, with Corey Morrissey adding the extras.
Man of the match and hooker Sid Wiltshire then extended Hornets’ lead to 17–7 with an explosive line break. RWB hit back with another converted try before half-time, leaving the game finely poised at 17–14.
Debutant Jack Saxton scored his first try for the club early in the second half to make it 22–14. However, Hornets could not shake off a quality RWB outfit, who responded with another well-taken converted try to reduce the deficit to 22–21.
Saxton then added a second try with a spectacular solo effort, this time converted by Thompson. The tit-for-tat nature of the contest continued, though, as another RWB try—this time unconverted—set up an exciting final 15 minutes at 29–26.
To their credit, it was the Hornets boys who seized the moment. A sublime pass from Morrissey sent replacement right wing Harrison Jay racing in for a try, before impressive left wing Anthony Deacon showed his pace and power to score another brilliant try on the final whistle.
The final score was 39–26.
It was another strong performance from the whole squad, and there is a growing feeling within the camp that this talented group of young Hornets still has plenty more to come—which is an exciting prospect for the club.
