Hornets v Lymm 15.11.25
Hornets welcomed Lymm to the Nest for their first ever visit and they came up against a well organised strong team and were well beaten in the end by 27 points to 19 and travelled the 175 miles back home pointless.
Prior to the game the Clubhouse again was filled to the rafters with another fantastic lunch and entertainment from resident host James Carter who treated all the guests to a very well organised montage of photos as they celebrated a milestone birthday of club stalwart Andy Mager.
Hornets entered the pitch behind 2 players who were celebrating their own milestones as Charlie Carter was playing his 300th Cap and Callum Lane who was winning his 100th Cap. Hornets would like to congratulate both players on their outstanding achievements especially Charlie who has been ever-present in this team for many years and has been a massive contributor to all Hornets recent success, well done boys!
However, Lymm hadn't come to make up the numbers and having won their last 3 games came with great confidence and that was obvious right from the kick off as they retrieved their own kick and set about pressurising Hornets into some solid defence and the line was protected and eventually Hornets worked their way up field to put pressure on the visitors. This continued with a proper ding dong effort by both sides as they cancelled each other out until Lymm were the first to score after 23 minutes 0-7.
Hornets from the restart were beginning to gain territory and the forwards were getting the upper hand. Sonny Haines made a break from a maul to gain ground on halfway and the ball shipped to Luke McMullan who spotted a gap and sailed through to go over near the posts for an easy conversion for Carter.7-7.
Lymm again stepped up and were rewarded with a try on 35 minutes and so the half ebbed away and the visitors had the edge at halftime 7-12.
The restart and a massive 8 minutes for Hornets as they imposed themselves on the game and had Lymm struggling to contain the power and pace of the hosts.
From deep inside his own half triple centurion Carter made a typical break and offloaded to the electric Connor Vickery who sailed through the defence with a dummy and a swerve to the line and Carter was good with the conversion and Hornets had the lead for the first time 14-12.
Just 2 minutes later Corey Baker made a break and surged deep into foreign territory and when being closed down chipped the ball through and the dynamic Joachim Hullah was able to gather the ball and go over and Lymm were shellshocked as Hornets were taking control of the game.19-12
Only 1 minute later the referee decided he had seen too many high tackles from the visitors and sent a player to the bin and now were up against it and Hornets felt this was their chance to finish off the game.
6 minutes into the yellow Hornets had a few penalties which were put in the corner and the lineout secured and the forwards set up good ground and the ball went wide to Hullah and he crashed through the tackle and dived for the line for his second of the day and Hornets were clear but still 22 minutes on the clock. 24-12.
Both benches were emptied as tired legs were replaced with fresh and the game continued in a similar trend as both defences were strong and the arm wrestle continued until with 3 minutes left Adam Francis was sent to the naughty step for a technical offence and Lymm sensed a chance to get a losing bonus point and they got the well deserved try and conversion and the game was put in the balance as only 2 minutes left. 24-19.
However, straight from the restart Hullah was awarded a penalty for his efforts and the defender was adjudged to be holding on to the ball on the floor and Carter stepped up to whip Lymm's bonus point away and more importantly put Hornets 2 scores clear.27-19.
With just seconds on the clock and Hornets won another penalty and the ball was cleared by Carter and the victory secured. Final Score Hornets 27 Lymm 19.
This result was a hard earned victory and another great home performance under their belt and Hornets keep the fortress secure at the Nest this season.
Hornets swapped places with Lymm in the league and move into a very impressive 4th spot as they look forward to another first as they travel to Syston the Leicester next week.
