Hornets Buzz Past Exeter in High-Scoring Encounter
Hornets 45 Exeter University 22
In a thrilling match at the Nest on Saturday, Hornets welcomed a familiar face for a high-scoring showdown that showcased the attacking prowess of both teams. The atmosphere was electric as the two sides took to the field, on Hornets Ayden Chenoweth’s 100th cap.
The match started strongly for Hornets with Chris Francis opening the scoring with a try after a powerful burst from blindside flanker. The home side extended their lead shortly after when Kieran Ward broke through the Exeter defence near the posts, with Charlie Carter successfully converting the try.
Exeter responded with a clever crossfield kick that led to a try for Josh Golden Clarke. The momentum shifted back to Hornets as Joachim Hullah touched down. But Exeter stayed in touch as Benjy Mills kicked a penalty to narrow the gap to 17-8.
As the first half drew to a close, Hornets struck again with a stunning try from Josh Shepherd, which Carter converted, leaving the halftime score at 24-8 in favour of the home team.
The second half began positively for Hornets, as a superb solo effort from Huw Morgan as he sliced through the Exeter midfield for a sensational try, again converted by Carter. The Hornets' pack then demonstrated their dominance, with Sonny Haines driving over from a lineout, further extending the lead with another successful conversion from Carter.
Exeter showcased their resilience with a try from Tyler Bailey, but Hornets responded almost immediately. A sumptuous pass from Jordan Humphris sent Carter racing away for his own try, which he converted, pushing the score to 45-15.
Despite a late resurgence from Exeter, with Archie Rolls crossing the line for a converted try by Mills, it was too little too late. The match concluded with Hornets securing a resounding 45-22 victory.
