Bournville v Hornets 8.2.25
Hornets travelled to Birmingham to take on Bournville who Hornets have never beaten at Avery Fields in the latest National 2 West League match and came away with a well deserved 5 point victory to strengthen their place in midtable .
Hornets had beaten Bournville at home earlier in the season and were in confident mood as they took to a familiar looking artificial pitch.
The home side languishing close to the relegation zone knew they needed a good start and after 9 minutes kicked a penalty from in front of the posts to take the lead 3-0.
Bournville were enjoying good quality ball and had Hornets on the back foot and again after 22minutes had a kick at goal to extend their lead to 6.
Hornets now kicked into gear and a loose kick by the hosts found Charli Carter just inside his own half and typically he made his way to and over the try line and the easy conversion and Hornets had pinched the lead . 6-7.
Hornets pack now were beginning to dominate and with a familiar face of Sonny Haines started to take the game to Bournville and a kick penalty and a classic catch and drive line out and Tom Read was able to fab the ball down to extend Hornets lead. 6-12.
More dominance and Hornets’ back row of Joachim Hullah , Corey Baker and Don Farmer were in complete control and a well worked move had Josh Sheppard over in the corner and Hornets went into the break in front 6-17.
Bournville refreshed, came out at a pace and has Hornets under a lot of pressure so much so that the hosts got a well earned try 11-17.
Hornets however hit back straight away when Haines marked his return to Hornets with a try.11-22
Bournville then had a great 10 minute spell where they scored 2 converted tries and had snatched the lead back from a dazed Hornets team.25-22.
Then the turning point where a yellow card was shown to Harry Dawson from Bournville on 67 minutes and Hornets sensed an opportunity to get the win.
Carter helped himself to another before player of the match Corey Baker both started and finished a superb try having gone through several pairs of hands before the open side scorched away under the posts to make the conversion easy for Jordan Humphris to extend the lead and only 5 minutes left . 25-34.
Just before the yellow card was reversed Tom Read got another and Humphris again converted and Hornets had an unassailable lead 25-41.
Right on full time Bournville having never given up got a try to at least get a try bonus point .
Final Score Bournville 30 Hornets 41.
This was a much needed bonus point win on the road for Hornets and their first double of the season as we start to look at the run in to an exciting league campaign.
