Match Report: Hornets 33 - Devonport 24

In a testing encounter at the Hornets’ home ground, the hosts welcomed Devonport for their first meeting in several years, braving challenging weather conditions with wind and rain. The match provided an entertaining spectacle for the hardy supporters who turned out to witness the action.

The game began brightly for Hornets, but early errors at the set piece allowed Devonport’s second row, Matt Gregory, to capitalise on a breakaway, opening the scoring with a try and putting Devonport ahead 5-0. However, Hornets responded quickly with a well-executed backline move, leading to a try for winger Huw Morgan. Charlie Carter’s conversion brought the Hornets to a 7-5 lead.

Devonport bounced back with a driving lineout that resulted in a try for hooker Aidan Taylor, which was converted by Rich Goldsby-West, giving Devonport a 12-7 advantage. The Hornets' resilience shone through as they regrouped and executed driving lineout of their own, with hooker Chris Francis crashing over for a try. Carter’s conversion saw Hornets take a narrow 14-12 lead into halftime.

The second half saw Hornets emerge with renewed energy and determination. Back rower Joachim Hullah scored his first senior try, converted by Carter, extending the lead to 21-12. Yet, Devonport were far from finished, with Gregory striking again to score his second try, converted by Goldsby West, narrowing the gap to 21-19.

In a critical phase of the match, Hornets found their rhythm, punishing Devonport’s defence with a quick-fire double score. Chris Francis was next on the scoresheet, crossing for his second try, which was converted by Carter. The scoring didn’t stop there, as Carter himself added to the tally, pushing Hornets to a commanding 33-19 lead in the closing moments.

Despite the setback, Devonport managed to secure a well-deserved bonus point with a late try as Gregory completed his hat trick however the conversion was missed to miss out on the second bonus point. The match concluded with Hornets emerging victorious at 33-24, but both teams displayed commendable spirit and skill throughout the encounter.
