In a thrilling match, the Hornets showcased their resilience and skill, managing to secure a hard-fought victory against a tenacious Exeter University team.
The game began with the Uni boys displaying strong intent, but they were thwarted by the Hornets' exceptional defence led by Chris Francis and Sam Scott. It was Owen Griffith who broke the deadlock, capitalizing on a deft offload from Don Farmer to score under the posts, with Luke McMullan converting the try.
The Uni quickly answered back as Finn Worley-Brady powered over from close range, with Mills successfully adding the conversion. The momentum shifted further in favor of the Hornets when McMullan, showing his attacking prowess, found a gap to score a fantastic try. Corey Baker then produced a standout moment of the match, turning the ball over in his own 22 and sprinting the length of the field to score a memorable try, again converted by McMullan.
Exeter University began to close the gap as Sam Erskine scored, but just before halftime, Josh Sheppard delivered a brilliant solo effort, breaking down the left wing to touch down at the posts, once more converted by McMullan.
The second half started similarly to the first, with the Hornets scoring again through Charlie Carter, who touched down out wide for the visitors’ fifth try. Replacement fly-half Jamie Elswood added a penalty, putting the Hornets in firm control of the match. However, Exeter rallied with 20 minutes left. Connor Byrne found space to score, and Lewis O'Grady converted. Minutes later, O'Grady added a try of his own, breaking through several defenders to touch down.
Despite Exeter's spirited comeback and a late try from Robert Gaffin, converted by O'Grady, it was the men from the Nest that closed out the game for a well-deserved victory, taking home the five points. The match was a testament to their skill and determination, as they continue their fine run form.
Outstanding young prop Sam Scott was awarded man of the match for a powerful display in the front row. The squad now look forward to next weeks showdown with local rivals Old Reds at the Nest next Saturday before a well deserved break. Get yourself down to Hornets RFC next Saturday afternoon for what promises to be a titanic battle between two cracking sides.
