On an unseasonably warm and sunny remembrance Sunday Hornets Chargers Boys U16s welcomed Avonmouth U16s to the nest.
The first few minutes were fast and furious from both teams. The visitors had a lineout in Hornets 22 but knocked on giving the hosts a scrum from which they made their way up the pitch into Avonmouth’s 22. More pressure saw Hornets finally break Avonmouth’s defence and winger James Phillips touched down over the line. Charlie Roberts added the conversion.
From the re-start Avonmouth followed up the kick, gained a penalty 10m out from the hosts line but put the kick dead resulting in a 22 drop out for Hornets. The play was again fast and Hornets had a lineout on half way which was cleanly caught by second row Rohan Conroy who popped it down to hooker Ellis Roberts who charged his way into the 22 putting huge pressure on the visitors line which after a few penalties resulted in fly half Josh Price going over to score.
From the re-start Avonmouth chased up their kick and with quick hands scored out wide. More pressure from the Hornets forwards from the re-start gained them a penalty and a quick tap saw prop Noah Turner scoring.
Again Avonmouth came straight back and scored from a well worked lineout just inside the hosts half.
Half time score was 17-10 to Hornets.
The second half saw Hornets go up a gear with centre George Spinks scoring from a tap and go in the visitors 22. Roberts converted.
Hornets final try came from a rampaging run from openside James Powell receiving the ball in his own half and making it into Avonmouth’s 22 before being tackled. Quick ruck ball and using their width the ball found winger Roberts who scored out wide.
Avonmouth were not done and scored another try from a scrum.
Final score 29-15 to Hornets. A well contested game and great to watch.
